I find this simple quote very profound after the last 9 months.  I was in a serious accident in December of 2009 and am almost recovered.  Knowing how close I came to not being here at all, this quote is inspiring me to not only get on with my life, goals and dreams; but to live my life to the fullest and to be happy.  I learned the hard way that nothing can be taken for granted.

Why is this quote important to you: One of Mother's favorite quotes was, "What you take into your mind, you become." Thus, as the first of many summers at a northwoods cabin began, my sister & I were not surprised to find a poster of good thoughts facing us in the outhouse. Even 50 years later, the memorized lines of this stanza still challenge me to get beyond my introverted self to help others. I know few other people who learned core values in an outhouse!

Why is this quote important to you: Abigail Adams is one of my favorite historical figures.  She was ahead of her time with regard to women and human rights.  She made this statement during the painful birth of the United States.  Given the economic problems and the recent wars our country has been involved with , I think it is a timeless reminder of how difficulties can shape people into doing great things.

Why is this quote important to you: As someone who has traveled all around the world and loves to read about other cultures, I have personally experienced how this heightened awareness of the world changes ones view - not just of others, but of oneself.  This can lead to better understanding of other cultures and what we personally value and need.  We often talk about seeing a situation from 'someone else's shoes', but rarely apply that as a nation.  It is a real wake-up call when you do and a great chance for betterment.  In the end, one can only hope better understanding can lead to global peace.
